Dr. Michel Laberge, President

Dr. Laberge is a physicist with an extremely good knowledge of all the latest technologies in electronics, computers, materials, lithography, optics and fabrication. He has practical experience in plasma physics and with all the modern plasma diagnostic techniques. He is experienced in building all sorts of test gear, apparatus and set-ups for testing hardware and ideas in record time.

He completed his B.Sc. in physics from Laval University in 1983. In 1985 he graduated from Laval University with a M.Sc. in physics. In 1990 he earned his Ph.D. in physics from the University of British Columbia and in 1991 completed a Post Doc. at L'ecole polytechnique in Paris, France. He also did another Post Doc. at the National Research Council, Ottawa in 1992

Following his education, he was a Senior Physicist and Principal Engineer at Creo Products, Vancouver, Canada, from 1992 to September 2001. Since then he has been working on the General Fusion project. He has written numerous scientific papers, started a successful small company and has five patents and five more pending.



Lon McIlwraith, Senior Mechanical Engineer


Mr. McIlwraith has over 30 years experience in the design, development and implementation of mechanical systems and products. Prior to joining General Fusion in April 2003, he worked for Rolls Royce UK (1973-79), Boeing (1980-82), Triumf (1982-89) and Creo Products (1989-96). For several years after leaving Creo, Lon was a freelance designer, designing and developing many successful products for Vancouver companies. He is highly innovative and holds six US patents.

He completed his HNC in mechanical engineering at Glasgow College of Technology in 1977, with sponsorship from Rolls Royce.




Dr. Stephen Howard, Principal Researcher - Plasma Injector Project


Dr. Howard has over 11 years experience working in the field of experimental plasma physics, with a focus on the development of magnetically confined fusion energy. He has been awarded numerous research fellowships; with over a dozen publications of his research. He also holds one US patent.

Stephen received the B.A. degree in Applied Mathematics from Bennington College, VT in 1999 and the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Applied Science, University of California, Davis in 2006.
Dr. Howard joined the General Fusion team in October 2007.

Dr. Howard conducted his doctoral work on the leading US compact toroid accelerator facility, CTIX, where he was responsible for the design, construction, and operation of new experiments, and developed new diagnostic techniques for measuring turbulence in a high velocity plasma. He has initiated and managed several research collaborations with outside groups, and took a leading role in writing DOE and NSF grants for the CTIX group. Dr. Howard’s work on CTIX also involved investigation into possible future designs of larger-scale plasma accelerators, which is now finding direct application toward achieving the goals of General Fusion.




James Gregson, Computational Researcher


James Gregson is the simulation expert at General Fusion. He graduated from Dalhousie University in 2005 with a B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering after which time he began working at Martec Ltd., a Halifax based defense contractor. At Martec, James worked as a developer on the compressible hydrodynamics code Chinook, designing and implementing several key features to meet the needs of current and future contract work. These included large-deformation fluid structure interaction, particle-based methods for multi-phase flow and adaptive mesh refinement. These features have subsequently been used in a wide variety of applications and documented in numerous scientific publications.

James is currently completing his MASc at the University of British Columbia on modeling the interaction between the General Fusion reactor structure and liquid lead core. He also works directly with General Fusion in developing solvers and performing simulations to aid in the overall design of the reactor.
